Things
to Consider Before Purchasing a Handheld
Device
|
|
There
are many things to consider when
choosing a handheld device and no single
device will be a perfect fit for all
users. But the beginning of any
hardware search should be a user needs
analysis. Edu-Track Home School for
the Handhelds will run on the most basic $49
Palm handheld device, but consider your
other needs . Thousands of
applications are available for Handhelds, so consider
how else you might be using your
handheld before making your purchase
decision.
Where
will the devices be used?
Indoor
and outdoor lighting can affect the
display on some devices, especially
those with color.
How
long will I be away from a PC and
battery charger?
Although
the average battery life of a handheld
devices is significantly longer than a
portable PC, this is still a factor when
choosing a device and an important
consideration for protecting your data.
Long life lithium ion batteries replace
AAA batteries on some models,
manufacturers estimate that these can
last up to one week. If you are
planning to use the device away from the
charger for several days, we recommend a
device with removable media for data
backup.
Will
I need wireless internet connections?
Mobile synchronization and internet
access are possible using many of the
internet enabled wireless handheld
devices (both Palm & Pocket PC).
Will
I synchronize away from a PC?
Even
if you will not need live internet
access on the handheld, they may wish to
synchronize to a network database
without synchronizing to a PC first.
Several manufacturers produce ethernet
cradles that connect directly to the
network or add on devices that work like
an ethernet card and allow wireless
network synchronization at a network
Access Point
Are
the devices susceptible to injury?
There
are two ways to prevent loss of data: 1)
Removable backup media and 2) A durable
device.
What
is my budget?
Handheld
pricing varies from models designed for
"student" use to those which
can replace laptop PCs. Prices
range from as little as $79 for basic
models to hundreds of dollars.
How
much memory do I need?
In
general there is a trade-off between
memory and price. Devices start
with about 32MB of memory. Most
manufacturers extend the device RAM
with Compact Flash media or other add-on
storage memory media. It is always
a good idea to purchase a handheld
device with expandable memory.
